Mark Janke, Medal of Bravery

Monday, April 23, 2012

Congratulations to Mark Janke who was presented with a Medal of Bravery from Governor General David Johnston in a ceremony at Rideau Hall, April 20, 2012.

The award to Mark, and another man, Darren Bieber of Weyburn, stemmed from an incident near Stoughton in April 2008.

As per the Governor General of Canada’s website, “On April 28, 2007, Darren Bieber and Mark Janke rescued one person from a submerged vehicle, near Stoughton, Saskatchewan. A car with five people on board had lost control, left the roadway and flipped into a water-filled ditch. One of the occupants got out and ran to the road to alert passersby. Mr. Janke stopped his vehicle and got out to help. He was able to pull two people out of the wreckage. At that point, Mr. Bieber arrived and helped Mr. Janke pull out the last two victims. Messrs. Bieber and Janke took care of the two survivors until the ambulance arrived. Sadly, three of the occupants did not survive.”
